Quite a simple premise behind these lyrics: the breakdown of a relationship. You got a guy and a girl, the girl is giving the guy a hard time and trying to manipulate him. A lot of people get together then one person tries to change the other well, this song is about that. Let’s dissect:

The chorus, “Oh No! Here We Go! / In trouble again now don’t you know / I gave you a 9 out of 10 / But then you messed with my head and you did it again” – this story is told from the bloke’s perspective. In his head, he’s the innocent party and can’t understand what the problem is. He’s just being himself and getting shit for it. The refrain, however, hints at the fact that there isn’t going to be much change going on: “You picked on the wrong guy now”. He’s pissed off!

As the song starts with the chorus, I thought it would be neat to backtrack a bit, to the beginning of the relationship. As is often the case, the honeymoon period was perfect “Let me rewind a year or two / When things were great between me and you”. Somewhere along the line, something changed, and not for the better.

Verse 2 deals with the fact that a split has occurred, although there is a hint that it wasn’t amicable and there’s some bitching going on “Give me a break for heaven’s sake / You know that you are not the victim here”.

The middle 8 adds to the refrain. Whoever this bloke is, he isn’t one to be changed and, in fact, resents the fact that this person has attempted it. I think a lot of men just want an easy life – ideally, they get together with someone and want it to just stay how it is from then on. But then situations occur and they kind of go along with it and, next thing you know, they find themselves in an unhappy situation. Well, the guy in this song isn’t one of them. Yes, he wants the easy life but, as soon as the pressure starts, he’s outta there! “Just when you thought it was safe / You pushed to get your own way / What can I tell you / But that shit just don’t work with me”.

Verse 3 is my favourite. It’s angry. After all, he was happy as it was and would have quite happily continued as it was. Shame she messed it up, in his eyes. He has come out of it bitter and twisted and is taking no prisoners. He is angry and wants an apology! “I want to see you beg / I want to see you beg / I want to see you pleading for your absolution”. But then he just throws it back in her face: “You fucked it!”.

Most songs about relationships breaking up are a bit whingy and are all about heartache. This is the antidote to that. This is a “Fuck you! You fucked it up with your shit, not me” kind of tune. And it sounds like it too. Although it is written from the male point of view (coz I’m a chap), could easily be reversed, so don’t go all thinking I’m sexist, numpty.
